Becket Adams at the Washington Examiner reports on something I flagged on Twitter for the fact checkers like PolitiFact. MSNBC host Katy Tur claimed on Twitter that none of the Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee apologized to Ford for whatever pain coming forward caused her.
“It will no doubt resonate that each GOP Senator starts his time by apologizing to Kavanaugh for what he is going through, while none took their time to apologize to Dr Ford what she has been through,” Tur tweeted Thursday to more than 563,000 Twitter followers. This fact-mangling tweet was a smash.
Obviously, most Republican Senators on the committee gave their time over to lawyer Rachel Mitchell to question Dr. Ford -- in large part, because liberals in the media made such a big deal out of how insensitive white males would make Ford's questioning so unpleasant. But Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Charles Grassley apologized to Ford for the brickbats she suffered for coming forward to make her allegations:
“Both Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh have been through a terrible couple weeks. They and their families have received vile threats. What they have endured ought to be considered by all of us as unacceptable and a poor reflection on the state of civility in our democracy. So I want to apologize to you both for the way you’ve been treated. And I intend, hopefully, for today’s hearing to be safe, comfortable, and dignified for both of our witnesses. I hope my colleagues will join me in this effort of a show of civility.”
Tur then acknowledged "oops" on Twitter -- within 15 minutes: "Pardon me, except for Sen Grassley." As of Saturday, the original tweet had over 17,000 retweets, while the "oops" had just 350. Alex Griswold at the Free Beacon was all over that differential on Twitter as well.
Brit Hume tweeted: "Her original comment was false and her subsequent 'correction' was utterly insufficient."
PolitiFact has yet to notice. They don't really like fact-checking journalists -- well, outside Fox News, anyway.
