Boston Globe White House reporter Matt Viser created a popular tweet among Democrat partisans over the weekend on the Donald Trump gaffe alleging Sen. John McCain wasn't a war hero because he was captured. Viser noted Kerry came to McCain's defense, and worked in the Swift Boat veterans controversy:

That drew over 1,200 retweets. Somehow the Kerry-boosting reporters never acknowledge how John Kerry impugned the war records of thousands of Vietnam veterans by coming back and testifying to Congress that American servicemen routinely violated human rights for fun.
Viser also noted "Kerry considered asking McCain to be 2004 VP pick. But they’ve grown distant. Tonight’s reminder: they always defend each other’s war record."
And: "McCain has called Kerry 'a human wrecking ball' and 'delusional.' Kerry tonight came to McCain’s defense amid Trump attacks on war record."
Viser didn't acknowledge that trend went both ways, like when McCain was running for president in 2008:
McCain "has proven that he has been wrong about every judgment he's made about the war," Kerry said, adding: "Wrong about the Iraqis paying for the reconstruction, wrong about whether or not the oil would pay for it, wrong about Sunni and Shia violence through the years, wrong about the willingness of the Iraqis to stand up for themselves."
