MSNBC Downgrades Most of Democratic Debate Field as ‘and More’

June 22nd, 2019 12:15 PM

In the first season of the classic TV show Gilligan’s Island, “the professor” and “Mary Ann” were downgraded by the show’s theme song to “and the rest.” MSNBC did that for most of the 2020 Democratic candidates in a new ad airing this week. An announcer hyped the event even as people like Senator Amy Klobuchar and Congressman Tim Ryan were dismissed: “Two nights that will make history. Next Wednesday, Warren, O’Rourke, Booker, Klobuchar and more.”

Apparently individuals like Washington State Governor Jay Inslee are “all hoping to break through.” For night two, more candidates were ignored: “Then, next Thursday, Biden, Sanders, Buttigieg and Harris battle it out with six others.”

Six others? You mean Senator Michael Bennet and Congressman Eric Swalwell? But the hosts of the debate, including liberal Rachel Maddow, all got top billing: “The first Democratic debate. Moderated by Lester Holt, Savannah Guthrie, Jose Diaz-Balart, Chuck Todd and Rachel Maddow. Next Wednesday and Thursday at 9 eastern on NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo.”

In a fun and amusing ad over on CNN, hosts Jake Tapper and Wolf Blitzer parodied Tom Hanks in the 1988 film Big. They previewed the cable series The Movies, which starts July 7 on CNN.

Here’s a transcript of the MSNBC ad.
