MSNBC historian Jon Meacham has some "advice" for the Republican Party: Drop dead. That was what Meacham was essentially saying on Friday's The 11th Hour on MSNBC that the only way to fix the Republican party (make it more like the Democrat Party) is to keep on losing.
Let's just remember that Meacham isn't some disinterested historian. In 2020, he was a secret speechwriter for President Biden, until the conflict of interest surfaced. So naturally he wants the Republicans to lose, so he has more speech-writing opportunities, like that bunk about leftists "restoring the soul of the nation."

MEACHAM: In the polls for the former president, but that is not what politics is. Politics properly understood is the way we conduct our public life, and the way that we have chosen to conduct our public life in the United States is according to the rule of law. And right now, a significant chunk of once noble party, the party of Eisenhower, Reagan and George W. Bush, a party that did in fact put country above themselves. They are not doing that right now. You talk to Republicans, I talked to Republicans, they will say the quiet part in private, that we want to move on from Trump, but you can’t just say. This requires action. It requires a willingness to say, my team is wrong, and until we get it right, I will vote for the other guy.
Because let’s be clear, as Abraham Lincoln said, human beings, he said man, man act on incentive. The only incentive, the only way to do this, and you mentioned President Biden, he’s my friend, I helped him when I can — the only way to do this is to continue to have Republicans lose at the polls, and I am not a Democrat. I am not a Republican. I have voted for people and both parties, but the only solution that I can come up with, and I am open to others is the only way to fix the Republican Party is to have it continue to lose, and that is really, really hard. But I genuinely believe that it will be the ballot that convinces Republicans in the and that they have to do something about this flight.
This is nothing new from Meacham since it is apparently a topic constantly on his mind. Last April, Meacham said essentially the same thing.
"One of the things that we have to figure out it seems to me is how to convince people that Donald Trump is not good for the constitutional order," Meacham said. " The only thing I've come up with, and you talk about a lot, is that Republicans just have to keep losing. And I don't say that as some nutty Democrat, this is a Lincoln insight. Lincoln said all men act on incentive. And as uncomfortable as it is we have to speak truth as we see it, that's what the constitution guarantees as [a] right."
Before anybody in their right mind takes advice from Meacham, keep in mind that when he was editor of Newsweek in 2009, he had the laughable idea that cutting the circulation of that periodical in half was somehow a good thing. I kid you not.
Jon Meacham admits it is hard to explain, even to his own people, why chopping Newsweek's circulation in half is a good thing.
"It's hugely counterintuitive," the magazine's editor says. "The staff doesn't understand it."
...Newsweek, whose circulation was as high as 3.1 million in recent years, plans to cut that to 1.5 million by the beginning of 2010, in part by discouraging renewals. The magazine will begin charging the average subscriber about 90 cents an issue, nearly double the current rate.
So how did that Meacham idea work out? Well, a year later Newsweek ended up being sold for... a dollar.
Oh, and don't ever expect the highly partisan (despite his less than credible protestations to the contrary) Meacham to recommend that the way for the Democrat Party to fix itself is to keep on losing. That "advice" is for Republicans only.
