Psst! Hey Jon Meacham! Haven't you gotten the liberal message that you are not supposed to mention impeachment (for now) in case the Democrats win back the House this November?
Perhaps historian and failed Newsweek editor Meacham is so eager for that impeachment that he just couldn't hold back on Monday's Morning Joe. They were discussing the horror of President Donald Trump wanting the DOJ to investigate intelligence agencies spying on his 2016 presidential campaign which led to Meacham eagerly invoking the I-word that Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer prefer to not be mentioned (for now).
If you earn a dollar for every time host Joe Scarborough and Meacham say "Nixon" or "Nixonian" in the following video culminating in Meacham's impeachment fantasy, you will end up with a nice bit of spending money. Here's the exchange:
SCARBOROUGH: I do wonder if there is any other description for what happened this past weekend than suggesting that it's Nixonian. Suggesting that it appears at least to be, we appear to be on the eve of where Nixon was before he launched a Saturday Night Massacre.
MEACHAM: I think we are. I think that's right. I don't think that's hyperbolic when you have a president who's basically engaging the Justice Department at this level of political detail and calling on investigating his predecessors. You know one Nixonian element here that hasn't gotten a whole lot of attention actually at least explicitly is both Nixon and Trump have an ongoing obsession with their former opponents in a way that [inaudible] what they do in deleterious ways to say the least. Remember Nixon was always thinking about... One of the reasons he justified the taping is FDR had done it, LBJ had done it, he was always obsessed with what President Kennedy had gotten away with in his view and remember of course that's clearly true with with President Trump with an obsession with both Obama and with Secretary Clinton.
Did Nixon tape his opponents via a FISA warrant based on opposition research paid for by a political party? Here's more from Meacham:
My own sense is, and this may sound kind of League of Women Voters-y, but the most important political story in the country right now in many ways are those 435 House races. Because I've been skeptical of this but I would now bet a good bit of money this is gonna end up in the House with some kind of impeachment proceeding and the makeup of that body and then ultimately the reaction of the United States Senate which is supposed to be the great deliberative check and the great final hammer on these things is... I think we're gonna end up. That's gonna be the season finale of this.
Will Jon Meacham bet the same amount of money on impeachment that Newsweek lost when he was editor-in-chief there when he introduced a novel "counterintuitive" economic concept by thinking he could increase its revenue by purposely slashing it's circulation in half? How did that work out, Jon? Well, I think we know because after he left Newsweek, it sold for only a buck. Not a dollar per issue. The entire Newsweek company sold for a buck.
