Jay Leno was at his comedic best Tuesday evening.
The NBC Tonight Show host spent much of his opening monologue lampooning President Obama beginning with, “It's still a little warm, but you can tell fall is coming...The leaves are changing faster than the White House position on Syria” (video and transcript follow):
JAY LENO: A little cooler today. It wasn't so bad today. It wasn't quite so hot out today. It's still a little warm, but you can tell fall is coming to the East, you know? The leaves are changing faster than the White House position on Syria. It's unbelievable. [Laughter]
Well, the President spoke earlier tonight about Syria, and, you know, the polls show many Americans are ill-informed about Syria. In fact, nine out of ten people surveyed thought Syria is the female voice in their iPhones. They didn't realize. [Laughter]
And John Kerry has given Syria one week to hand over its chemical weapons, and if they don't, he'll give them another week. So that's kind of where we are right now. [Laughter]
Vice President Joe Biden has been very quiet on Syria. So at least some good has come out of this. [Laughter]
But I tell you, President Obama’s foreign policy taking a beating, especially abroad. They're not as excited about him as they used to be. In fact, people in Kenya are saying, "We're positive he wasn't born here. You know, I don't think he's even. No.” [Laughter] So it's not -- yeah. [Applause] It's a little tricky.
And last month, last month, 312,000 Americans stopped looking for work causing the unemployment rate to fall to 7.3 percent. Today President Obama called it a step in the right direction and encouraged more Americans to stop looking for work. So let's bring that down a little bit. Yeah.
