National Review editor Rich Lowry made a tremendously pessimistic prediction on PBS's McLaughlin Group this weekend.
"Despite the heartening support for Chick-fil-A – we’ve seen hundreds of thousands of people flocking to the restaurants - private sector and government bullying of opponents of gay marriage is the wave of the future" (video follows with commentary):
I'm not sure Lowry's right on this one.
Irrespective of President Obama's recent evolution on same-sex marriage, America still is a divided nation when it comes to this issue.
More importantly, virtually all citizens on both sides of the aisle recognized the obvious first amendment component that was in play here.
This is why so many media members came down strongly on the anti-free speech comments of elected officials such as Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel.
In the end, all the support Chick-fil-A received across the fruited plain made this a tremendous victory for the right and an equally huge loss for the left.
With that in mind, I'm not sure how many private sector or government representatives are going to be willing to repeat this bizarre episode any time soon.
