Do they want cops dead? It might sound like a hyperbolic question but when there’s a video of a car accelerating towards sheriff’s deputies and NBC Nightly News was upset they killed the driver behind the wheel, it becomes a valid question. Especially when they’re using the incident to push a race-baiting agenda and trying to defund the police.
The incident in question occurred last Friday when Brevard County Sheriff’s deputies followed what they thought was a stolen vehicle. When officers got out of their cars, they issued multiple orders for the driver to “stop the vehicle.” After reversing, the teen placed the car in drive and rocketed at deputies. The deputies then opened fire, killing both the driver and a passenger in the backseat.
Of course, NBC had to play the race card. “New dashcam video showing a Florida deputy opening fire on a car moving towards a deputy killing two back teens. Their families tonight are demanding answers,” announced anchor Lester Holt.
At the top of the video portion of the report, correspondent Sam Brock lied to viewers by claiming the car was stopped just before the shots rang out:
SAM BROCK: In newly released police video --
UNIDENTIFIED OFFICER: Stop the vehicle.
BROCK [Speaking over the dashcam video]: -- central Florida deputies shout commands to a teenage driver last Friday who appears to stop the car and then this.
OFFICER: Stop the vehicle! [Bleep] Stop! Stop! [Car accelerates towards the officer and the officer opens fire.]
In reality, the video clearly showed the car going in reverse and then immediately racing towards officers.
“Shocked residents protesting on Wednesday as the sheriff's office says deputies were acting in self-defense giving repeated verbal commands, seven to be exact, before the teenager the vehicle towards the deputy who was then forced to fire his service weapon,” he added.
Brock seemed to scoff when reporting that “[a]uthorities say a third occupant in the car, who was unharmed, confirmed hearing the verbal commands.”
He followed that up with a statement from Natalie Jackson, the lawyer representing the mother of the teen in the backseat. “I don't think that it's implausible to think that they were afraid of the police officer shooting them. We’ve seen when people do comply they get shot. When they don't comply they get shot,” she told Brock.
That presentation from NBC was disturbingly similar to an anti-cop segment on the CBS Evening News late last month. On October 27, anchor Norah O’Donnell and correspondent Jericka Duncan were upset that two Philadelphia police officers shot and killed a man who was chasing and lunging at them with a knife.
Effectively, these networks were bitter because the cops involved protected themselves and others from possible death or injury. So, I ask again: Do they want cops dead?
