Politico's headline didn't even proclaim that Republicans are "racist" and "old-fashioned," but CNN's Carol Costello had no problem touting the invective of some GOP critics while putting it all under Politico's name.
Costello tweeted on Monday, "Politico: GOP closed-minded, racist, rigid, old-fashioned." The Politico article was titled "Report: How GOP lost young voters" and described the findings of a report by the College Republican National Committee on how the party was viewed by young voters after the election.
One graph, not anywhere near the top, detailed "words that up-for-grabs voters associate with the GOP," reporting that "The responses were brutal: closed-minded, racist, rigid, old-fashioned."
Costello went ahead and touted this on Twitter as if a reputable source like Politico had concluded it. It's questionable if she would give the same priority to an article on the Democrats' travails after a bad election for the party.
Just in the last few months, Costello has gone out on a limb attacking Republicans and conservatives.
She showed her disbelief when some Republican senators threatened to filibuster the gun control bill, asked if defenders of traditional marriage were on the wrong side of history, and said farewell to Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) by crowning her the "butt of a thousand jokes."
When Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) asked for offsetting spending cuts with federal emergency aid to Oklahoma, Costello mocked that as "either extreme fiscal responsibility or a raging case of 'this is not the time."
