Morning Joe Regular: Voters Preferring Trump As Better on Economy Display 'Selfishness'

September 9th, 2020 12:35 PM

Are you worried that—given his support for higher taxes and the economy-nationalizing Green New Deal—Joe Biden could jeopardize your retirement and ability to provide for your family? Do you therefore support President Trump? Professor Eddie Glaude Jr. wants you to know that your attitude is nothing less than "selfishness."

On today's Morning Joe, Princeton prof and Morning Joe regular Glaude said that the Trump campaign has a double-edged strategy: appealing to non-college educated whites with "grievance and fear," and to suburbanites "because Joe Biden and the radical left will jeopardize their economic well-being, their 401(k)s and the like" who would be acting out of "selfishness and self-interest."

Wait a second! Isn't it the Democrats who loved to talk about their focus on "kitchen-table issues?" But now, worrying about the economy is suddenly "selfishness?" Sounds like Glaude is taking a page out of Barack Obama's book, who back in '08 infamously told Joe the Plumber that he planned to "spread the wealth around."

You know you're stuck on a leftist channel when the professor uses the phrase "the socialists that Joe Biden is supposedly beholden to," as if Biden and Bernie Sanders didn't negotiate a socialist platform that Bernie says would make Biden "the most progressive president since FDR."

Morning Joe regular Glaude's branding Americans' concern for their economic well-being as "selfishness" was, ironically, sponsored in by E*Trade, along with Verizon and Procter & Gamble, makers of Tide

Here's the transcript.

Eddie Glaude Jr. MSNBC Morning Joe 9-9-20EDDIE GLAUDE JR.: Remember yesterday, you guys talked about, very briefly, how Donald Trump is still polling very strongly among those who believe he will handle the economy better than Joe Biden, right?

Even though the numbers are what they are, there is this sense that Donald Trump can, in fact, be the one to hold off the radical left, the socialists that Joe Biden is supposedly beholden to.

So, there’s a sense in which the strategy maybe — and I might be wrong here — kind of relies on these twin efforts. Double down on grievance and fear, and on selfishness and self-interest—that many folk in the suburbs will not take the risk of betting on Joe Biden because Joe Biden and the radical left will jeopardize their economic well-being, their 401(k)s and the like.
