Even conservatives not inclined toward Trump might rally to the Donald's defense after seeing this sneering condescension from the New York Times .
On this evening's With All Due Respect, the Times' Jonathan Martin was asked, after viewing a clip of Ivanka Trump, how her more active involvement would affect the campaign. Responded Martin: "the comments that you heard right there are so stark to me, because they are a departure from the Trump brand that we know. I mean, she sounds like a really sort of poised, smart, capable person." So Donald's flustered, stupid and incompetent, Jonathan?
MARK HALPERIN: Something new in Trump world, Ivanka, at an event in Washington, DC, spoke on camera about her dad.
INTERVIEWER: Are you happy that your father is running for president? [Laughter]
IVANKA TRUMP: That's a come complicated question. [Laughter] So, "happy" is an interesting word. I'm incredibly proud of him. It's a very difficult thing to do. And I see now just how difficult it is. And he has achieved tremendous success. He was not a politician, he is not a politician. But he's really changing the dialogue.
MARK HALPERIHN: Jonathan, a little news I picked up the other day. Ivanka's expecting a baby due right around the Iowa caucuses. How formidable will she be do you think as a surrogate between now and Iowa for her dad?
JONATHAN MARTIN: Well, it depends on how much she wants to do. But the comments that you heard right there are so stark to me, because they are a departure from the sort of Trump brand that we know. I mean, she sounds like a really sort of poised, smart, capable person. So she could be an asset. It depends on how much Trump wants to put her out there. So much of the campaign is what he wants to do. It's his whims, his instincts. If they put her out there more, it could put more of a human face on the Trump phenomenon. But again, it's a question of how much does he want to turn over control of the campaign from his Twitter account and from his every thought.
HALPERIN: I think she's going to be extraordinarily strong for him.
