Those paranoid Christians. Always thinking someone is persecuting them. Pro-gay violence? Christians bullied for supporting traditional marriage? Puh-leeze. Just grow up already. That stuff never happens. Only gays get bullied.
That was the sarcastic approach of comedian Samantha Bee in a fake reporting segment she filmed for “The Daily Show.” Interviewing (controversial) right-wing evangelical pastor Matt Slick, she scoffed at his claim that gay agenda activists are “not tolerant,” and mocked the idea in a satirical exposé of anti-Christian bullying.
HuffPo proudly publicized Bee’s attack on traditional Christians, calling it “hilarious” that she “openly mocks an evangelical's claim that Christians are ‘bullied’ by the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.”
Why, Bee pretended to ask with a dubious look on her face, is “this hypothetical violence not being covered, or recorded, or even occurring? Maybe it’s because the figures are being hushed up by the Homosexual-Industrial Complex.”
HuffPo gay blogger Todd Clayton also participated in the derisive video, and he explained the rationale behind it: “The motivation ... was to expose the fallacy [of anti-LGBT Christians claiming to be victims of bullying],” he stated. “For Christians to claim they are victims of bullying is asinine,” he insisted.
But some people might not find that very funny – for instance, the family of Mary Stachowicz, a Catholic woman who was brutally murdered in 2002 by a gay co-worker for questioning his lifestyle, and whose death was minimally publicized by pro-gay media.
Or how about the “harassment, intimidation, vandalism, racial scapegoating, blacklisting, loss of employment, economic hardships, angry protests, violence, at least one death threat, and gross expressions of anti-religious bigotry,” that pro-traditional marriage proponents in California met with when they expressed support for Proposition 8?
Not to mention the members of a Michigan church who were ambushed by a gay rights group screaming “It’s okay to be gay” and “Jesus was a homo,” among other staggering instances of pro-gay bullying across the country? Including death threats and vandalization of private propertydirected at Christians who spoke up in defense of Prop 8?
Maybe Bee thinks she’s pretty darn funny for mocking Christians who support traditional marriage, but pro-gay vitriol is nothing new. Anti-Christian, pro-gay bullying does happen, and her smirking about it shows Bee is just joining the ranks of the overwhelmingly pro-gay mass media.
