Yikes: Did Joy Behar Just Call Obama, Harris, 'Tokens'?

April 26th, 2021 1:00 PM

Did Joy Behar just call President Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris black “tokens”?

After backlash ensued last Friday for the liberal co-host Joy Behar “misgendering” Caitlyn Jenner on The View, Behar appeared to have another slip of the tongue on Monday’s show.

She used the pejorative term while blasting Republican Senator Lindsey Graham for denying that the country had a problem with “systemic racism.”

As we all know, “systemic racism” is a sacred cow for the left, so naturally, Graham’s comments have been garnering outraged fact-checks on CNN and MSNBC this morning. The mostly liberal panel at The View had to weigh in as well. But when it was Behar’s turn to speak, she  dismissed the election of both a black president and vice president as “tokenism” to make her case that the country still suffered from systemic racism:

"What's really appalling is Lindsey Graham who says there's no systemic racism in this country. I mean, somebody needs to give Lindsey Graham a globe to tell him which country he's living in. Is it possible for somebody to get dumber as they get older?" Behar began.

That's when she downplayed Americans electing Barack Obama and Kamala Harris as evidence the country isn't inherently racist:

I mean, first of all, systemic racism is not about tokenism. It's not about the vice president being black or the president being black. It's about what goes on in the lives of every day people in this country. What we're talking about is red lining and housing discrimination, we're talking about employment discrimination.

She argued again, "It has nothing to do with Kamala Harris being the vice president."

Right after this, Whoopi Goldberg scolded Graham, reminding him she grew up with members of Congress who were part of the KKK:

I know it's very easy, Lindsey, to think there's no systemic racism. But you know, I grew up in a system in the United States here where pretty much a lot of the Congress and a lot of the Senate were guys who had served with the -- you know, being the royal dragon or whatever the KKK is called, where we had folks who were in white supremacist groups serving as our congressmen and senators...

The co-host didn’t mention that the majority of these congressmen were Democrats, and one former KKK member was even eulogized by our current and past two Democrat presidents.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Joy, what about you? Did any of this surprise you?

JOY BEHAR: What's really appalling is Lindsey Graham who says there's no systemic racism in this country. I mean, somebody needs to give Lindsey a globe to tell him which country he's living in. Is it possible for somebody to get dumber as they get older? I don't remember him being this bad when he was a younger guy. What the heck happened to this guy? I mean, first of all, systemic racism is not about tokenism. It's not about the vice president being black or the president being black. It's about what goes on in the lives of every day people in this country.

What we're talking about is red lining and housing discrimination, we're talking about employment discrimination. Remember that study Whoopi they did a couple years ago if you have a name they think is ethnic, they will reject your um interview, won't call you back for a second interview? That is what you call systemic racism. Voter suppression. White privilege needs to be dealt with. These are the things. It has nothing to do with Kamala Harris being the vice president. It's about the guy next door to you who couldn't move into the house because he's black and you live in a so-called white neighborhood. That's what systemic racism is about. And everything that follows from there -- the school system, child care, employment, transportation, everything follows from there. I'm just appalled by Lindsey Graham. I'm appalled.
