View hosts Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin doubled down on their defense for Biden OMB Director nominee and Democrat hack, Neera Tanden, on Tuesday’s show, focusing solely on the numerous controversial tweets she’s sent on Twitter over the years.
Even though these same hosts defended Tanden about two weeks ago, they came rushing back to help the Biden nominee after more senators voiced their opposition this week.
Whoopi Goldberg couldn’t contain her laughter, mocking Republicans. “Neera Tanden, probably won't have the votes to get appointed because of her past tweets, both attacking Republicans and Democrats. So some in the GOP say she's divisive and doesn't have the temperament for the gig,” the co-host snorted as her co-hosts chuckled.
Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin continued downplaying Tanden’s controversies to a handful of “mean tweets”, to better hit Republicans for allowing President Trump’s “mean tweets.”
BEHAR: It's rich, isn't it? To hear Republicans who are still attached to the hip to Donald Trump who called women slobs, dogs, horse faces, fat pigs, that they're - upset by her nasty tweets. Not to mention grabbing women by their private parts. You know I think they don't want to remember what happened in the past four years, and this is just going to be a reminder about how despicably they all have behaved in this regard.
After Behar slammed West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, Sunny Hostin backed up her point that there was a “double standard” at play. Hostin even admitted she agreed with some of Tanden’s tweets, scoffing, “Where are the lies?”
HOSTIN: Well, there's a clear double standard when you have people like Joy pointed out that would confirm a Jeff Sessions or a Grenell and not confirm Tanden because they're offended by her mean tweets. When you look at her tweets, yes, she had to delete over a thousand tweets and yes, were they in poor form, no question. I thought it was inappropriate then and inappropriate now. But look at some of the tweets. She tweeted that Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell was 'Voldemort.' [chuckle] She said that vampires had more heart than Ted Cruz. She said that Senator Susan Collins of Maine was, ‘the worst.’ Where are the lies there, right? So, there was a little bit of humor in the tweets, yes they were mean and inappropriate. But should she not be confirmed because of that because in four years we’ve seen rapid confirmations, we've seen you know the former disgraced, twice-impeached, one-term president just tweet horrible, horrible things. We've seen these senators tweet things. So I just -- the double standard is just the height of hypocrisy here. I’m pretty surprised at it.
But as noted previously, The View hosts didn't downplay Trump tweets. Behar even asked if Trump could be charged with hate speech for his tweets.
Co-host Meghan McCain said her peers were missing the point and it wasn't just tweets Tanden was being held accountable for, citing her alleged assault of a reporter, outing a sexual assault victim, and scathing complaints about her leadership from people who formerly worked for her. "I don’t want to hear anything about waxing poetic about searching for the soul of the country and this is atone-ship, if you're going to have people like Neera Tanden holding cabinet positions," she argued.
McCain got the last word in this segment but they followed up with a gooey segment praising Biden’s Attorney General nominee, Merrick Garland.
After playing a clip of Garland discussing his Jewish family fleeing from the Holocaust, Behar gushed that he, Biden and Jamie Raskin’s personal tragedies made them “highly qualified” to lead this country:
I feel that we have three men right now in charge, Biden, Jamie Raskin and Merrick Garland, all three have experienced personal tragedy which they are in a way highly qualified for the job right now because we need passionate people who have a core of self and people who care about other people, because partly because of their own tragedies.
Sara Haines was equally as effusive, saying that Garland had “every reason to call Mitch McConnell, 'Voldemort,'” but he “elevated” the national conversation with his example and his nomination gave her hope that the country was in better hands:
As you mentioned it's to his bones, that calling. You can see it, you can hear it in his voice. So I just -- he deserved this. It's long overdue. So I’m cheering him on and everything he said gave me hope. It’s another one of those appointments, nominations you're like, we're going to be alright. I thought it was amazing.

But He voted to confirm Richard Grenell, who mocked Hillary and Michelle Obama and Callista Gringich’s looks. He voted to confirm him. He voted to confirm Jeff Sessions who had a history of racism. So the hypocrisy is there, it’s all around us. And I would like to say that If Neera is not confirmed, I'm scared about her tweets. I don’t know what she’s going to say when she has nothing to lose!

JOY BEHAR: So President Biden's pick for Attorney General Merrick Garland had his Senate confirmation hearing yesterday where he made a passionate speech about how the bigotry his family faced prepared him for a life of service. Take a look.
MERRICK GARLAND: I come from a family where my grandparents fled persecution. The country took us in. And protected us. And I feel that obligation to the country to pay back, this is the highest best use of my own set of skills to pay back and so I want very much to be the kind of Attorney General that you're saying I could become.

I still remember that really emotional shot of him when President Obama nominated him to the Supreme Court, and he got emotional talking about his family and his career and the importance of service and as you mentioned it's to his bones that calling. You can see it, you can hear it in his voice. So I just -- he deserved this. It's long overdue. So I’m cheering him on and everything he said gave me hope. It’s another one of those appointments, nominations you're like, we're going to be alright. I thought it was amazing, yeah.
BEHAR: How refreshing was it for him to say I'm not the president's lawyer - and I will work for the American people, how refreshing was that, Meghan, to you?
