It’s nice to see that members of the mainstream media are keeping an open mind as the Supreme Court begins hearing arguments today in the first of two cases that could reshape how America defines marriage.
Exhibit A is TIME magazine’s Joe Klein, who appeared on this morning’s “Morning Joe” to share his utter disbelief that there was any need for the high court to entertain arguments against the obvious constitutional right of homosexuals to marry.
Isn’t it weird that California, which is always the advance guard of any new social thing, is now the rear guard? I mean, how quickly has this issue changed? Five years. My God, I haven’t seen anything like it…. To my kids it’s just mystifying that anyone would be opposed to it.
The tone and tenor of Klein’s remarks are reminiscent of the left’s views on climate change. The debate on same-sex unions, in other words, is devoid of complexities and hence over. The fact that Californians voted by a margin of 52% to 48% to ban them in November 2008 is an uncomfortable irrelevancy to Klein and his ilk.
It is fascinating that the party of tolerance and its water carriers in the elite media can show such intolerance for opposing views, even when they have difficulty explaining them.
