Title 42 came to an end seven days ago, and according to Noticiero Estrella TV and President Biden, the situation is portrayed as being more than just fine. In fact, they assert that the number of encounters at the border is lower than the week before the policy ended. This information was conveyed by U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, and Estrella proudly touts it as a victory. However, what they conveniently fail to mention are the details regarding the nature of these encounters. It is worth noting that among the individuals detained, one of them was a man on the FBI terror watch list.
On Monday, Noticiero Estrella TV begins it’s cast with “[t]here are fewer immigrants attempting to cross the border towards the United States, they claim that the flow has decreased by up to 50%.” Once the show started, host Palmira Pérez said:
We will begin with the evident decrease in migrants wanting to cross the border following the end of Title 42. It is clear that the flow of people has significantly decreased. What was predicted as a new wave of immigrants overwhelming the border and causing a new migration crisis doesn't seem to have happened. According to the Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, in the past two days, the Border Patrol has experienced a 50% reduction in the number of encounters compared to earlier this week, before the expiration of Title 42 on Thursday.
Furthermore, Estrella likely wants to direct your attention solely to the past two weeks, rather than considering the numbers since President Biden assumed office. The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has reported a significant increase in total enforcement actions from fiscal years 2017 to 2023. Specifically, between 2017 and 2019, there were 2,358,103 total enforcement actions. However, from 2020 to 2022, that number skyrocketed to 5,369,923, which is more than double the previous figure. As of now, the CBP has recorded a total of 1,544,087 border actions for this year.
On the other hand Fox News has been asking challenging questions, about the situation at the border. President Biden's statement, "much better than you expected hehehe," has been a subject of discussion. It implied his perception that the border situation has shown improvement, although it is worth noting that this statement lacks specific details or supporting evidence.
It is important to consider these facts and statistics to gain a comprehensive understanding of the ongoing border situation, rather than solely relying on selective information provided by Estrella and the President.
