Removed or Released? Telemundo Offers Contradicting Reports on Border Deportations

December 20th, 2022 6:58 PM

Telemundo News seemed unable to get their information straight yesterday when two reports about the arrivals of hundreds of thousands of migrants at the southern border, and Title 42, left viewers up in the air with conflicting information.

The 7-minute segment - which included a dramatic Title 42 graphic composition featuring the mandatory gloomy children (when most of the migrants making the trek are single young MEN) began with Edgar Muñoz reporting from El Paso, Texas. When asked by anchor Julio Vaqueiro for details, Muñoz informed that the Department of Homeland Security would continue to deport undocumented migrants crossing into the United States, this following the decision by the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday to temporarily block an order to end Title 42.

However, only seconds later, the removal claim was cancelled by reporter Francisco Fajardo, reporting from Yuma, Arizona, who confirmed that massive numbers of migrants were being released by authorities; “So many families with children and adults have been released, that they can't find space in shelters, churches, and sleep on the floor over a layer of ice.”

JULIO VAQUEIRO: Edgar, what's going to happen to all those migrants at the border?

EDGAR MUÑOZ: We already know the answer; they're going to try to cross into the United States, and for that reason, the Department of Homeland Security just reported that they're going to continue with Title 42, that they're going to continue with the removals.

 [...]

FRANCISCO FAJARDO: So many families with children and adults have been released, that they can't find space in shelters, churches, and sleep on the floor over a layer of ice.

The contradictory information followed anchor Julio Vaqueiro´s mention of a statement made by White House press secretary, Karin Jean-Pierre, to the effect that the border crisis was disinformation from coyotes, something which Vaqueiro offered to the public with no pushback at all.

This is what Jean-Pierre said:

"To be clear: the lifting of the Title 42 public health order does not mean the border is open. Anyone who suggests otherwise is doing the work of smugglers spreading misinformation to make a quick buck off of vulnerable migrants.”

While the Spanish-speaking corporate media continue to serve their interest, and vie for a steady audience via an open border, the public deserves better.
