Operation Palladium: Univision Demonizes Border Enforcement, Promotes Hysteria

March 9th, 2020 7:00 PM

The liberal Hispanic media´s penchant for headlining anonymous, secondhand news to intimidate viewers through trepidation, is alive and well at Univision. Case in point: a report quoting a dubious New York Times article about Operation Palladium, the joint effort between ICE and the Department of Homeland Security, aimed at monitoring undocumented immigrants in sanctuary cities.

Notice how anchor Jorge Ramos opens this report about how the streets will be “flooded” with ICE agents – the NYT references anonymous sources and an invisible “internal email” – using the words “the biggest offensive” “to arrest and deport as many undocumented immigrants as possible”. Ironically, Ramos’ apocalyptic statistics were contradicted by the network´s own immigration expert, as you can see in these clips from Univision News and Univision News “Edición Digital”, respectively, that aired on Friday, March 6, 2020:

JORGE RAMOS, UNIVISION NEWS: The Trump administration would have already engaged in the biggest offensive against so-called sanctuary cities, to arrest and deport as many undocumented immigrants as possible, according to a new report from The New York Times. The report adds that Operation Palladium practically consists in monitoring undocumented immigrants without respite.

BORJA VOCES, DIGITAL EDITION: What is ICE's direct target?

JORGE CANCINO: (Undocumented) immigrants with criminal records.

Ramos states in his report that in sanctuary cities, ICE is “monitoring undocumented immigrants without respite”; however, he skipped mentioning that the operative is NOT solely meant for criminal undocumented immigrants living in the so-called sanctuaries, as reporter Blanca Rosa Vilches reveals from the official comments provided by the Department of Homeland Security:

There is a huge accumulation of fugitive foreigners roaming the streets, which has been exacerbated by sanctuary policies. ICE and CPB are using agents and officials, and now HSI special agents, to supplement routine law enforcement in areas where the need is greatest, including some sanctuary jurisdictions.”

Earlier in the day, at Univision News’ Edición Digital broadcast, anchors Carolina Sarassa and Borja Voces had one of the network’s immigration experts on board to discuss Operation Palladium. Answering Voces’ question about who is being “targeted”, Univision Chief Immigration Correspondent Jorge Cancino clearly stated “(undocumented) immigrants with a criminal record”.

A fact even the Times story mentions, albeit briefly and in the penultimate paragraph, hailing from the mysterious internal email: “Between 500 and 600 investigators are also being temporarily assigned to the sanctuary cities operations from the separate division of ICE known as Homeland Security Investigations, which focuses on breaking up human and drug smuggling rings.”

In the end, it hurts to listen to a veteran anchor like Jorge Ramos, who sells himself as the mighty defender of ALL Latinos, insinuate that all undocumented immigrants are criminals… which is precisely what he accuses the President of doing.
