The nation’s top Spanish-language television networks continue to focus on the GOP presidential nominating contest as the nasty one, making only brief mentions of the recent spate of nasty attacks between Sanders and Clinton.
Focused on barbs between Trump, the RNC and Cruz, so far the heated tone of the Democratic contest has been mostly overlooked. Sanders, Clinton and their surrogates have been fighting hard for a victory in the New York primary. At a Sanders rally in New York, Dr. Paul Song said:
“Medicare for all will never happen if we continue to elect corporate Democratic whores who are beholden to big pharma and the private insurance industry instead of us.”
Dr. Song apologized for his comment on Twitter after coming under heavy fire for the remark. This is not the first time a Sanders surrogate has gone off the rails in the campaign.
Recently, their English-language counterpart ABC summarized five instances where Sanders surrogates delivered vicious attacks against Clinton. That compilation does not take into account the time Sanders himself declared that Clinton is not qualified to be President. None of these have managed to have come up at all when Univision and Telemundo cover the Democratic race.
Clinton's campaign has also been ruthless and blistering against Vermont’s socialist Senator. Among other attacks, Clinton has railed against Sanders' record on gun control. Specifically, she attacked Sanders on his vote for immunity against gun manufacturers.
On their April 14 broadcast, for example, Telemundo spent 31 seconds mentioning Dr. Song's remark. Univision spent 2 minutes, 46 seconds focusing on the April 14 debate and skimmed the attacks. Compare that to Univision and Telemundo's combined 6 minutes, 7 seconds devoted to coverage of Trump that same evening.
Remember "nobody cares about the damn e-mails"? Looks like that is no longer the prevailing spirit in the Democrats’ contest, and Univision and Telemundo have not noticed.
