The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) claims in its mission statement that the organization works to “advance the human rights of all people.” But the SPLC has appeared more interested in silencing and deplatforming conservatives from platforms like Twitter in recent years than promoting so-called human rights.
The SPLC has now claimed that, rather than censor conservatives, Twitter actually amplifies “extremists.” The organization claimed: “Twitter’s willingness to amplify extreme far-right voices has been a significant part of the company’s history. Now, those voices are one of the defining characteristics of the platform.” The SPLC has listed conservative organizations like the Family Research Council and Alliance Defending Freedom on its “hate map.”
Ridiculously, the SPLC whined that Twitter apparently allowed what the organization considers “extremists.” The organization ignored Twitter’s overt leftist bias. Even the platform’s CEO Jack Dorsey reportedly admitted that conservative employees at Twitter “don’t feel safe to express their opinions” at work. The SPLC even complained about Dorsey allegedly enabling “hateful” content. “Dorsey and his staff have in fact enabled some repeat offenders, who post at a high volume on the site and have built up big followings to spread hate and disinformation. Many of these disinformation superspreaders have never faced any meaningful consequences for violating Twitter’s terms of service.”
The SPLC attacked Twitter for not going far enough in pushing a leftist agenda: “Twitter sometimes employs marketing tactics to project an image of progressivism, even though the website has developed a reputation for being littered with white nationalists.” The SPLC also referenced that Twitter “put #BlackLivesMatter and #BlackTransLivesMatter hashtags in its corporate bio on their site.” Apparently the hashtags did nothing to prove the platform’s overt leftist bias.
The SPLC has either forgotten or ignored the fact that Twitter censored former President Donald Trump 625 times between May 31, 2018, and Jan. 4, 2021, before he was kicked off the platform. The company has since refused to allow him back. Twitter did not censor President Joe Biden at all during the same period of time.
The SPLC is a left-wing organization with an apparent vendetta against pro-life, pro-family organizations, like the Family Research Council (FRC). The SPLC labels groups it opposes as “hate groups” under the “Hatewatch” section of its website. Its “hate” labeling of the FRC had violent consequences — a politically motivated shooter confessed to choosing his targets according to SPLC’s “hate map” in an “act of terrorism with the intent to kill” against FRC’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. in 2012.
