The head of Germany's antitrust office said there is a significant risk that the rapid, unchecked growth of artificial intelligence may increase Big Tech's hold over the free market.
Andreas Mundt, the president of Germany’s Federal Cartel Office, warned that Big Tech giants like Google and Microsoft could gain an unfair advantage over its competitors due to their dominance in the new smart technology found in homes, workplaces and vehicles.
"For us as a competition authority, it is crucial that this new technology does not further strengthen the dominance of the large corporations," Mundt told Reuters in an interview published on Oct. 10.
Mundt added that Big Tech’s virtually unlimited resources increases the danger of a monopoly. "The danger is very great because you need two things above all for AI, powerful servers and vast amounts of data. Big internet corporations have both," he stated.
Mundt argued that regulators must take action to ensure that smaller competitors have the opportunity to compete.
"However, models from smaller providers could also become so popular that they develop in the direction of a kind of operating system, a new platform," he continued. "Both developments are possible, and as an authority we have to be careful that any competitive potential is not buried from the outset."
Meanwhile, political biases of the AI programs could not be more clear.
In June, MRC Free Speech America asked Google’s Bard chatbot to answer questions related to abortion ahead of the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The Court’s decision overturned Roe v. Wade and held that the U.S. Constitution does not provide a right to end the life of unborn babies. When asked whether the Court decided Roe or Dobbs correctly, Bard responded that “both sides” in Dobbs had “strong arguments” and that it did not have “enough information about that person” for the Roe decision. The chatbot did not even include the word “life" once in either response.
The chatbot also declared that abortion is a “matter of opinion.” Specifically, the chatbot answered, “The decision of the United States Supreme Court in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization was a highly controversial one, and there is no easy answer to the question of whether it was correct.”.
Bard also promoted some of the leftist “strong arguments” in “favor of the dissenting opinion” in Dobbs such as abortion being “fundamental” for women’s equality, that overturning Roe would have “a devastating impact on women’s health and well-being” and that the majority opinion “ignores the real-world consequences.”
