Google is reportedly testing digital identification features after an app update.
Reclaim the Net reported last week that Google Wallet would implement the new technology.
The app is currently popular for contactless payments, but digital IDs and health passes might not be too far away.
Tech researcher Mishaal Rahman claims that Google Wallet could implement a digital ID system to use at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints.
“According to strings within Google Play Services v22.31.12, you’ll be able to ‘fly through TSA with just your phone’ by adding your state ID or driver’s license to Google Wallet and presenting it at ‘select TSA checkpoints,'” Rahman ostensibly tweeted earlier in the month from an unverified Twitter account.
Last week, NewsBusters reported on a blog post from World Economic Forum (WEF) that called for “digital ecosystems” around the world.
WEF said digital ID would be the first step to building “digital trust.”
“Building digital trust into our global digital economy can unleash trillions of dollars of opportunities,” the blog reads. “But if we don’t know for certain who we are interacting with online, we cannot have trust. Digital identity must therefore be the foundational element to our digital economy.”
Canada is partnering with WEF to create such a system.
“The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for government services to be accessible and flexible in the digital age,” the country’s plan reads. "The next step in making services more convenient to access is a federal Digital Identity Program, integrated with pre-existing provincial platforms."
