Twitter must remain “politically neutral” in order to gain public trust, Elon Musk said. Musk sent out several tweets that expressed his desire to uphold freedom of speech on the platform. “For Twitter to deserve public trust, it must be politically neutral, which effectively means upsetting the far right and the far left equally,” he tweeted.

Several verified users responded to his tweet. Sports commentator Clay Travis observed: “If you doubt how rigged Twitter has been for far left wing blue checkmark brigade members, just look how hard they are fighting Musk endorsing political neutrality & a pledge to reduce censorship.”

Former Congressman Justin Amash (R-Mich.) suggested Musk consider libertarianism as a way to anger both sides. “If you’d like Twitter to upset the far right and the far left equally, we libertarians are here to help.”

MRC Free Speech America and Business Vice President Dan Gainor added that ideological neutrality would be a “huge improvement.” “Except everyone on the right is used to Twitter mistreating them,” he said. “So, neutral is a huge improvement.”
Musk said he bought the platform to further free speech. "Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated," he said.
He added that his goal was to make Twitter “better than ever.”
“I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans,” he said. “Twitter has tremendous potential – I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it."
He also noted that most of the attacks against him since he purchased the platform came from the left.
“Attacks are coming thick and fast, primarily from the left, which is no surprise, however I should be clear that the right will probably be a little unhappy too,” he said. “My goal is to maximize area under the curve of total human happiness, which means the ~80% of people in the middle.”
