Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he is giving “serious thought” to creating a new social media platform to rival Twitter.
“Would you consider building a new social media platform, @elonmusk?” an account asked on Saturday. “One that would consist an open source algorithm, one where free speech and adhering to free speech is given top priority, one where propaganda is very minimal. I think that kind of a platform is needed.” Musk replied: “Am giving serious thought to this.”
The Babylon Bee CEO Seth Dillon said the left would not want to be part of such a platform. “No one left of center wants a free speech platform,” he tweeted. “They want a platform free of misinformation and hate speech — that is, opinions they don’t like. Why would they join a free speech platform?”
The Media Research Center’s Dan Gainor was in favor of the idea. “Please do this, but be prepared for epic opposition from the left/NGOs and government,” he tweeted. “They fear free speech as we have truly witnessed the last two years especially.”
Last week, Musk tweeted his support of free speech and challenged Twitter’s “adherence” to it. He asked his followers to vote “yes” or “no” in a poll that asked users whether the platform supported free speech. “Free speech is essential to a functioning democracy,” he tweeted on Friday. “Do you believe Twitter rigorously adheres to this principle?”
Musk emphasized: “The consequences of this poll will be important. Please vote carefully.”
Musk slammed Twitter’s algorithm on Thursday: “I’m worried about de facto bias in ‘the Twitter algorithm’ having a major effect on public discourse.” “How do we know what’s really happening?,” he asked.
