Is it too much to ask for a Hollywood awards show with no politics? Apparently, it absolutely is too much to ask for.
Now I must say, the celebrities participating in the 74th Emmy Awards on Monday, September 12, on NBC weren’t as political as usual, but some of them just couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to take a jab at former President Donald Trump, because why wouldn't they?
"Orange man" is still the number one boogeyman for many folks in Tinseltown. Trump derangement syndrome (TDS) is clearly alive and well in Hollywood. It seems like some of them will never move on.
The jokes at Trump’s expense during the award show weren’t even original and were rather tame compared to previous shows. They also avoided actually saying his name.
Actor Martin Short got a few laughs from the audience after referencing some details that have been reported on regarding the FBI raid that recently took place at Mar-a-Lago.
"Thank you so much for what, in my head, was a standing ovation," Short said. "But please, this is so embarrassing Selena [Gomez] and Steve [Martin] are here too. Really, what an audience you are. I wish I could box you up and take you home like classified white house documents."
Now Saturday Night Live's (SNL) Bowen Yang also made a sarcastic joke referencing Mar-a-Lago while on stage with his colleague and Emmys host Kenan Thompson.
"I loved The White Lotus, but murder isn't the worst thing that can happen at a resort. You know what is? What the FBI did to my president at Mar-a-Lago," he said.
So a couple of jokes were made at the expense of Trump. I think it’s safe to say that no one is really that surprised by this, but it's stunning that not once was there a joke or jab aimed at President Joe Biden. In fact, his name wasn’t mentioned at all. Not one time!
If you watched the show and didn't know anything about American politics, you wouldn’t even know he was president.
Compare that to when similar award shows happened during the Trump presidency. Celebrities obsessively used the stage to swipe at Trump and other republicans for that matter.
The contrast is striking.
Now I’m all for Hollywood not getting political, but it’s truly stunning that not a word was uttered about Biden, his unpopularity, the Biden family scandals, inflation, the crisis at the border, the list goes on.
