Turns out, some lefties do lose their jobs over blackface incidents. Sure, they’re not politicians -- the media/Democrats don’t give up power that easily. But it’s still kind of fun to see cracks in the not-as-I-do hypocrisy that protects liberals from having to live by their own ever-changing rules.
Comic and progressive zealot Sarah Silverman “was recently fired from a film after producers unearthed a still of her in 2007 wearing blackface for a comedy sketch.,” reported the Guardian August 12. Silverman related the story on the The Bill Simmons Podcast, saying that, “at 11pm the night before” she was to start shooting, “they fired me because they saw a picture of me in blackface” from a 2007 episode of the Sarah Silverman Show.
Her confusion and hurt at this turn of events seems genuine. “I think it’s really scary and it’s a very odd thing that it’s invaded the left primarily and the right will mimic it.” Maybe, but the constant howl of outrage -- “righteousness porn,” Silverman called it -- is a defining characteristic of the modern left. Silverman seems to be just waking up to it:
“It’s like, if you’re not on board, if you say the wrong thing, if you had a tweet once, everyone is, like, throwing the first stone,” she continued. “It’s so odd. It’s a perversion. It’s really, ‘Look how righteous I am and now I’m going to press refresh all day long to see how many likes I get in my righteousness.’”
Hm. Hey Sarah, sucks, doesn’t it? But this is the world you and your pals have made. Actors are bigots for wearing common tee shirts, resentful former NFLers dictate which American flags are acceptable and baseball players have to answer for tweets from high school. Best just to reiterate your social justice bonafides, confess your crime and turn your (white) face to the sunny progressive future.
“It was like, I’m playing a character, and I know this is wrong, so I can say it. I’m clearly liberal. That was such liberal-bubble stuff, where I actually thought it was dealing with racism by using racism.
“I don’t get joy in that any more. It makes me feel yucky. All I can say is that I’m not that person any more.”
“Liberal-bubble stuff,” indeed But while you’re at it, Sarah, why not inventory your conscience and make a full confession? We know your abortion views (the more the merrier) are orthodox lefty. But what of your other opinions? Have you ever “conflated gender identity with sexual orientation?” Ever use the word “English” (“American,” in your case)? What’s your stand on junk-waxing?
The answers to these and other questions may determine whether you have a future in the business, Sarah. But chin up! There are places for off-color vaudevillians with extreme abortion views. Ever think about Virginia politics?
