Chelsea Handler should just change the name of her Netflix show from Chelsea to Trump, because that's pretty much all her show is about this season. During a segment in the episode titled “Ladies and the Trump” on Friday, April 28th, she declared that even though it doesn’t feel great, rooting for President Trump’s failure in office is “the right thing to do.” Hmm, I seem to remember a time in the not-so-distant past when hoping the president fails was considered "arguably treasonous" to the left.
Three Hillary supporting actresses participated in a Trump-bashing confab with Handler – Tracee Ellis Ross, Aisha Tyler and Rosario Dawson. Ellis Ross said that Trump is making people feel afraid. Aww. Who knew she is such a delicate woman? Aisha Tyler declared that there is a “psychotic” running the country. Then, without a trace of irony detected, Rosario Dawson (who is so far left she originally supported Bernie Sanders) said we have to “inject peace and love into the process” and “Everyone is a part of it.”
Further into the discussion – the first half of this hour-long show was devoted to it – Handler lamented marginalizing people before the November election. She admitted she knew nothing about people in Appalachia or in the Midwest, but don’t worry. Without saying how, exactly, she said she learned about them. Tracee Ellis Ross said her privilege is a blind spot but it offers her a platform, then pretended she was open to listening to Trump supporters.
Finally, this from Chelsea to the audience: “Use your voice. Look at us. It works.” There is one problem with that conclusion - despite all the Hollywood support, Hillary Clinton lost the race. Again, the lack of irony noted in this show was amazing. The women continue to go low despite Michelle Obama’s advice to go high.
In sharp contrast to the profanity-laden conversation among the four women in the first part of the show, Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) spoke to Chelsea and noted that politicians no longer lead with “courageous empathy” but a hardening of positions. He said that no one listens to each other, instead demonizing others.
The problem with all this feel-good peace and love bunk is that Booker broke with Senate tradition during the nomination hearing of Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) for Attorney General in the Trump administration. He joined in with Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) to claim Sessions is some kind of racist. None of their disparaging claims were true, of course, but that didn’t seem to matter.
Booker claims that a politician shouldn’t be focused on a different elected office while serving in another. Funny, since he’s considered a potential candidate for the Democratic nomination in the 2020 presidential election cycle, that grandstanding during Sessions nomination hearing looked just like thinking ahead to the next election.
So, the irony is strong in Chelsea Handler’s world. Flip flopping between cursing and assassinating the character of conservatives while calling on everyone to be all about peace and love in the next sentence gets to be a bit much to take. Let’s hope this show can settle down a little to be more entertainment, less derangement.
