Danger, Will Robinson! All is not well in the NFL's inner sanctum. The surge in protests last weekend' has not emboldened the social justice warriors, owners or the league commissioner as media would have you believe. Many of them are more concerned than ever about the potentially disastrous repercussions of an unpopular player revolt.
The talking heads at CNN, NBC, ESPN and elsewhere and the writers at the left-stream outposts can sugarcoat it all they want, but your voice of outrage for the scourge that has taken over the pro game is getting through.
A New York Daily News story co-written by Pat Leonard and John Healy about Tuesday's not-so-secret meeting between NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and 10 owners and eight players reveals great consternation about opposition to the protests.
The New York Giants' defensive player Jonathan Casillas attended that meeting, and he said “the owners for sure don’t want us kneeling, not because of what the message is but (because of) the message that’s getting across. People have totally misconstrued the kneeling thing from the beginning.”
Casillas said the meeting resulted in no consensus on a unified plan going forward. "But there was a general consensus that something about players’ and clubs’ approaches must change given the negative response and ramifications (financially, potentially) of the player protests and their overshadowing of the NFL’s good."
“We’re in a trying time right now with all the racial situations, the kneeling, the (perception of) disrespecting of the flag and also fans pulling away from the greatest professional sports (league) in the country. At the end of the day, we’re talking about losing money. Nobody likes losing money, especially not any of these owners,” Casillas said.
Contrary to what Casillas says, The Daily News headline on this story is completely misleading: "NFL commissioner, owners held unity meeting about future protests; John Mara will support Giants who kneel." It doesn't give a hint of anything Casillas says about owner's fears over the potentially damaging impact of fan opposition to the player revolt. The banner gives the impression all is well behind the curtain when it really isn't.
The NFL issued a statement to The Daily News that “This was one of the many conversations that have happened this week within the NFL.” In other words, influential people are worried and they're talking.
Sports fans, keep resisting the resistance. Boycott the NFL this weekend, as MRC's Brent Bozell advises, and let the advertisers of NFL broadcasts hear from you. Keep standing tall for America, the Star Spangled Banner and our great veterans.
God bless America!
