The Golden Globes are deceptively influential. While they are presided over by only a handful of journalists from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, they precede the nominations for the Oscars and thus put the Press Association in a position to whisper names into the ears of Academy members.
Brooks Barnes of The New York Times writes of the Golden Globes: “Only 88 people — an idiosyncratic bunch, to put it mildly — vote on the nominees and winner.” And this year, the nominations are a lovely reflection of the Press Association’s “idiosyncratic” (read: left-wing) politics, which at the current moment are filled with conservative hate that will inevitably trickle down to the Oscars.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, anti-Cheney biopic Vice leads the pack with six nominations in total -- for Best Musical or Comedy, Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical or Comedy, Best Performance by a Supporting Actress, Best Performance by a Supporting Actor, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. Surprisingly, Vice left civil rights drama BlacKkKlansman, Asian glorification Crazy Rich Asians, and Jim Crow denunciation Green Book in the dust, which each received four, two, and five nominations, respectively.
Members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association would apparently like to see white actors Christian Bale and Amy Adams relentlessly caricature white conservative politicians instead of seeing John David Washington infiltrate the KKK as a black undercover cop.
In line with that theme is the hilarious nomination of Candice Bergen for her titular role in the deliberately anti-Trump TV series Murphy Brown. Not only did even liberal critics pan that series, but prior to its cancellation announcement its ratings had been declining consistently. Joining Bergen in the “Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Comedy or Musical” category is frequently unhinged feminist firebrand Debra Messing for her role in Will & Grace.
So what will be the outcome of the awards show? Only time will tell. But the nominations indicate that hate is becoming a lonely weapon in the Hollywood left’s arsenal.
