Ah, the Sundance Film Festival, where the magic of independent film takes center stage and audiences thrill to the prospect of discovering show biz’s next new big thing. According to The Daily Beast, that next big thing may be the “most unlikely star of the 2019 Sundance Film Festival,” Lucien Greaves, the leader of The Satanic Temple. Greaves and his group are the subject of the documentary Hail Satan?
The Daily Beast sat down with hell’s foremost representative on earth (sorry Governor Cuomo) to talk about the new movie, and their mutual hatred for conservative politicians. Turns out Satanism is really just far left progressivism -- both Greaves and the interviewer were practically finishing each other’s sentences. They even share the same nemesis: Vice President Mike Pence.
Greaves views Pence as an existential threat to his infernal congregation (well done, Mr. Vice President!) Really? Not the president? For Lucien Greaves, Trump’s hardly a big deal: “Trump is too stupid to predict; the guy has no concept of his own limitations.” But Pence, the evangelical Christian, is the splash of holy water to Greaves’s Beelzebub.
The Beast added to Greaves fear of Pence being a “Christian, a conservative, and a Republican, in that order,” by reminding readers that he also “denies the theory of evolution, signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act into law as governor of Indiana, and is rabidly anti-gay.” You could probably imagine both parties high-fiving each over, while wondering to yourself, “Who knew leftie outlets and Satan’s cronies could agree on so much?"
Er …
The interview then moved on to discussing the new doc about Greaves’ church, reminding readers that it has “had a surprisingly warm reception in Park City, Utah, deep in the heart of Mormon Country.” The film’s most controversial scene features former spokesperson for the Satanic Church and Greaves’ closest friend Jex Blackmore calling for “the execution of President Trump.”
Lucien Greaves assured the The Daily Beast that while nobody “in our group would cry if Trump died from choking on a ham sandwich tomorrow,” wishing execution on someone does not fly in his religion of peace. He assured that Blackmore was kicked out of her position within the infernal ranks, and that “we are a nonviolent organization … we are not going to be planting bombs, shooting people, or advocating for any type of violence whatsoever.” And for The Daily Beast, which instinctually views such behavior as befitting white Trump supporters, it was probably assurance enough.
