War Room, the Christian-based movie, continues to shock secular critics with its huge success. The film came out at No. 1 for summer box office charts this past Labor Day weekend. War Room, a movie about a struggling marriage and seeking guidance through prayer, is the latest movie from the Kendrick Brothers whose religious movies include Facing the Giants, Fireproof, and Courageous. The movie brought in $12.6 million this weekend and showed in roughly 1,500 theaters nationwide.
According to USA Today, the prayer-based movie beat Straight Outta Compton, grossing a total of $11.1 million this weekend. In third was A Walk in the Woods, starring Robert Redford—a movie attracting an older audience and bringing in $10.5 million. War Room also beat Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation, which grossed $9.3 million. And finally, it even beat the disappointing debut of The Transporter Refueled, the fourth installment in the Transporter series, which grossed only $9 million.
High hopes were set for the debut of The Transporter Refueled, but the movie “failed to ignite audiences,” described disappointed Hollywood Reporter. Instead, the No. 1 Labor Day weekend spot ultimately boiled down between War Room and Straight out Compton, with the former claiming a miraculous victory.
The religious film is a refreshing reminder that success isn’t always centered on sex and violence. Sometimes an ordinary film about family and faith is just the right ticket.
