Every villain on CBS’s Star Trek: Discovery is a caricature of President Trump. Not only are the Klingons chanting “Remain Klingon!” in their war against multiculturalism, but the newly evil Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs) stages a coup in order to “make the empire glorious again.”
Sunday’s episode, “What’s Past is Prologue,” takes place in a parallel universe where the Starfleet Federation doesn’t exist. Instead, its ruthless, xenophobic opposite reigns. Unlike Starfleet, which consists of hundreds of alien species, the Terran Empire is made up of humans who hate anything and everything non-human.
When Captain Lorca succeeds in taking over a Terran ship, he rebukes the former emperor for letting “alien races spill over the borders,” and asserts his desire to “preserve our way of life, our race,” before very predictably uttering that he “will make the empire glorious again.”
Instead of devising a new villain for the second half of their season, it appears Star Trek: Discovery has decided to simply recycle their Trump-style villain. Apparently they care more about pandering to their liberal audience than creating the sort of show that rises to the high bar set by Roddenberry’s timeless classic.
