Fully half of U.S. Democrat voters support replacing the presidency and Supreme Court with something else, but that proposal – and others advocated by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) – are broadly rejected by America’s total electorate, results of a new Rasmussen poll reveals.
The national survey, conducted July 28-30, asked U.S. likely voters to voice the strenght of their support for each of four DSA proposals:
- Replace the presidency and Supreme Court as we now know them.
- Abolish borders and grant amnesty to anyone currently in the U.S. illegally.
- Defund the Pentagon.
- Abolish prisons as part of a long-term program.
Among all voters, 56% said they disagree with replacing the presidency and Supreme Court, including 44% who “strongly” disagree with the plan. A third (33%) voiced support (17% strongly). Opposition dominated the views of both Republicans (75%) and “other” voters (58%).
In contrast, 50% of Democrats said they favor replacing the two institutions, with 28% reporting strong support.
What Rasmussen’s question fails to note is that the DSA plan replaces the president and Supreme Court with substitutes controlled by Congress:
“Replace the President and Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress.”
“They want the House of Representatives to have all the power,” Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) explained in a Fox News interview Tuesday,” warning of the threat of the DSA’s plan to subordinate the chief executive and Supreme Court to the House and abolish the Senate:
“If the Supreme Court reports to the House, you know what that means:
“You have no free speech rights.
“You have no religious liberty rights.
“You have no Second Amendment – because the Politburo can take away rights.”

Democrat voters’ support for the DSA proposals to get rid of borders (37%), defund the Pentagon (30%) and abolish prisons (25%) was also higher than that of all voters, taken as a whole (27%, 23% and 19%, respectively).
About two-thirds of all voters said they disagree with abolishing borders and granting amnesty (64%), as well as defunding the Pentagon (64%). Three-fourths (74%) said they disagree with abolishing prisons.
Generally, female voters, Black voters, younger voters and those who voted for Democrat Kamala Harris in 2024 were the most likely to agree with the four DSA proposals.
