Newsmax host Rob Schmitt ripped the media and the Biden-Harris Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for consistently battering the public with premature, pollyannish and ultimately empty good economic news.
Joined by Heritage Foundation economist E. J. Antoni, Schmitt discussed how the media and the BLS consistently put a good face on the Biden-Harris economy this past year during the Dec. 26 edition of Rob Schmitt Tonight. “The Biden White House spent four years telling us how great our economy was. The media told us it was great too, but most people didn't believe it because you could actually feel the economy. We felt the inflation,” Schmitt said. He went on to play clips of President Joe Biden and 2024 Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris touting predominantly out-of-context or now discredited job claims.
Recently, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia released an extremely embarrassing report for the Biden-Harris administration. “The latest numbers show the downward trend is continuing and even accelerating. For the second quarter of this year, that's just three months of time, the government had been expecting an increase of 653,000 jobs created,” Schmitt said. Schmitt added that the report found, “a revision down 700,000 from that increase.”
Schmitt put this jobs revision into context, noting that the BLS has routinely overestimated the number of jobs created, giving media outlets like CNBC positive news to trumpet for Biden and Harris during an election year. “It's interesting that the revisions are always down, at least in this last couple of years. They're always down. They never, ever, you know, have a number that actually goes up when it's revised,” Schmitt said. “When it's this big, when it revises down 700,000 from plus 653 [thousand], and these are numbers that are coming in before an election, my conspiracy theory mind starts to wander.”
Antoni also criticized the BLS and took on the media canard that Americans don’t know how good they have it in the Biden-Harris economy. Legacy media outlets such as CNN have repeatedly and condescendingly criticized polling showing that Americans are not impressed with the economy. Antoni pointed out that these Americans have been repeatedly vindicated whenever good economic news turns to dust and ashes when reexamined.
“I think this aligns very well with all of the economic polling data that we saw leading up to the presidential election, where despite the fact that the government kept publishing these crazy blockbuster jobs reports, when we actually polled the American people, they said that ‘No, jobs are actually not that easy to find right now. The pay is not that good and not that many of us are working,’” Antoni said. He then lit up the media and the BLS adding, “Turns out the polls were right and the government numbers were wrong.”
