A second former Biden administration employee has come out and warned President Joe Biden that promoting “Bidenomics” just isn’t worth it.
MSNBC host Symone Sanders, who served as Vice President Kamala Harris’ Chief Spokesperson and Senior Adviser and as a Senior Adviser to Biden’s presidential campaign in 2020, spoke bluntly to Politico about “Bidenomics.” After the interview, the outlet published a Jan. 13 article with the headline “Symone Sanders pans ‘Bidenomics’ message.”
According to Politico, Sanders dinged the seemingly overconfident Biden campaign for continuously pushing the much-derided “Bidenomics,” contrasting his campaign’s behavior today with Biden’s successful approach during the 2020 Democratic primaries.
In particular, Sanders went after Biden’s messaging on economics. “They are not going to get ‘Bidenomics,’ she said. “Let it go. How about you just make sure they know what you’re going to do and what you did?… You can give folks all the numbers about GDP and all these other things, but the data doesn’t move people. Stories move people.”
Sanders did try to defend the president, explaining away Americans’ dim view of his economy and presidency as a marketing issue. “They talked a lot about acronyms in the beginning and not enough about the plain things,” Sanders added. "You ain’t even got to name the legislation. Just tell the people what has happened. And I think that there was maybe too much of a focus on trying to message it tightly up in a nice bow and not enough focus on just, well, how can we make it plain for the people that we want to understand it?”
The failure of “Bidenomics” is much more than a messaging problem. From prices to wages to mortgage rates, the Biden administration’s record on economics is disastrous. Comparisons between Biden and his predecessor also do the current president no favors.
For example, Biden presided over an economy where prices rose by 17.2 percent in his first thirty-four months versus only 7.6 percent higher prices over the entire course of the Trump presidency (forty-eight months).
Sanders could also have mentioned that real wages have declined since Biden took office, falling from $373 a week in the first quarter of 2021 to $365 in the third quarter of 2023.
Harris’ former propagandist could have mentioned that a 154% mortgage rate increase that occurred between Jan. 20, 2021 and Dec. 7, 2021 is pushing homeownership out of reach for some Americans. She could have even named high gas prices, decimated savings, or simply high prices in general.
No, it’s just the American people who don’t understand.
Symone is not the first former Biden administration employee to criticize “Bidenomics.” Michael LaRosa, former Press Secretary to First Lady Jill Biden, wrote an MSNBC op-ed telling Biden in his headline that he should “stop focusing on the economy.”
