Anti-free speech Google announced Thursday its decision to consolidate its AI research divisions to keep up with other Big Tech giants, despite its CEO’s insistence that AI advancement should slow down.
Google combined its DeepMind AI program and Google Brain team from Google Research to form Google DeepMind. “We’re proud to announce that DeepMind and the Brain team from @Google Research will become a new unit: Google DeepMind,” DeepMind wrote in a tweet April 20. “Together, we’ll accelerate progress towards a world where AI can help solve the biggest challenges facing humanity.” [Emphasis added.]
Google DeepMind co-founder and CEO Demis Hassabis wrote in a blog post that Google DeepMind will work “in close collaboration with our fantastic colleagues across the Google Product Areas” to “deliver AI research and products that dramatically improve the lives of billions of people, transform industries, advance science, and serve diverse communities.”
And then came the hypocritical line: “By creating Google DeepMind, I believe we can get to that future faster.” [Emphasis added.]
The acceleration of the Big Tech giant’s AI program is just the opposite of what Google CEO Sundar Pichai called for a short time ago.
MRC Free Speech America reported that in a 60 Minutes interview on Sunday, April 16, Pichai claimed he was concerned about what he called “race conditions,” a situation, he said, “where people working on [AI] across companies get so caught up in who’s first that we lose, you know, potential pitfalls and downsides to it.”
“Anyone who believed Pichai's line about Google wanting to be cautious is just not paying attention. Google gave a head fake, but obviously, it is racing as fast as it can to create the most powerful tool the left has ever imagined to enforce its twisted views on humanity,” MRC Free Speech America & MRC Business Vice President Dan Schneider said in a statement.
Further underscoring the absurdity of Pichai’s call for caution was Hassabis’s claim in his blog that Google Deepmind would need to work with “greater speed” to achieve its goal of building a “more capable and general AI.”
“Building ever more capable and general AI, safely and responsibly, demands that we solve some of the hardest scientific and engineering challenges of our time,” wrote Hassabis. “For that, we need to work with greater speed, stronger collaboration and execution, and to simplify the way we make decisions to focus on achieving the biggest impact.”
In another tweet Thursday, Hassabis clued the public into Google’s ultimate endgame in AI advancement: the creation of artificial general intelligence. “Working with all our fantastic colleagues across Google, we have an opportunity to build AI and ultimately AGI to benefit humanity,” wrote Hassabis. “Looking forward to working with @JeffDean in his new role as Google's Chief Scientist. And excited for what we create next at Google DeepMind!” [Emphasis added.]
Twitter owner and tech entrepreneur Elon Musk warned about Google’s dystopian vision of creating “digital super intelligence” or artificial general intelligence (AGI) in an interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Tucker Carlson Tonight released Monday.
“Larry Page and I used to be close friends, and I would stay at his house in Palo Alto,” Musk said to Carlson. “And I would talk to him late into the night about AI safety. And at least, my perception was that Larry was not taking AI safety seriously enough.” Musk went on to say that “[Larry] wanted, sort of, digital super intelligence, basically digital god, if you will, as soon as possible.”
