WHAT GROWTH? ABC 'World News Tonight' Snubs Stellar Q2 GDP Economic Growth

July 31st, 2025 10:27 AM

You know some serious TDS is afoot at the House of Mouse when its flagship evening news program chooses to be the only one of the Big Three networks NOT to cover the Trump economy once again defying the so-called experts.

Yes, ABC World News Tonight actually chose to pretend like the Bureau of Economic Analysis’s report that GDP grew at a stellar 3 percent in the second quarter against expectations of a 2.3 percent increase didn’t exist during its July 30 broadcast. Not even the censorial lefties at NBC Nightly News and CBS Evening News were dumb enough to ignore this news, since the implications were that President Donald Trump’s tariffs were not having the disastrous effects many in the media had been stoking conniptions over for months.

But guess what? When the 1st quarter GDP number came in at -0.3 percent, Muir put the news in his opening roundup, and then White House reporter Mary Bruce dropped negative sentences on Trump for almost two and a half minutes.

But on Wednesay night, anchor David Muir spent 104 seconds of meaningless airtime covering a random marriage proposal video in Greece gone wrong when it got photobombed by another couple with a guy munching on a chocolate bar. Apparently this was more newsworthy than — *checks notes* — telling American citizens what in the world is going on with their economy. Oh, but that’s not all. Muir made sure to also spend 11 seconds of airtime covering shark sightings in Long Island, because no other local news organization in New York was following that story, right?

That’s some real hard-hitting journalisming there Muir (sarcasm)! Holy mackerel.

What ABC's David Muir Chose to Cover Instead of the Stellar Q2 GDP Numbers (07/30/2025)

The significance of the BEA report cannot be overstated. As Heritage Foundation economist EJ Antoni pointed out in an X post on the GDP news, “While consumer spending accelerated in Q2 from Q1, gov't purchases barely grew and in fact are now flat on the year; this is the reprivatization that Trump and Bessent have articulated - growing the productive private sector, not gov't.”

Even economist Daniel Lacalle went as far as to assert that “Inflationary pressures are nonexistent,” when viewing the sizable quarter-to-quarter PCE Index inflation slowdown from 3.7 percent in Q1 to 2.1 percent in Q2.

Antoni told MRC Business that rather than the government artificially juicing economic growth with out-of-control spending as it did under President Joe Biden, “All net economic growth over the last six months came from more consumer spending and fixed nonresidential investment” under Trump. No wonder why World News Tonight tried to bury this story.

But what can we really expect from Muir? After all, he anchors the very news show that gave then-Vice President Kamala Harris 100 percent positive coverage while plastering then-candidate Donald Trump with 93 percent negative coverage from July 21 through September 6 of the 2024 elections.

Saying ABC’s coverage is skewed against Trump in perpetuity has to be one of the biggest understatements of the year.
