Pathetic! CNN Tries to Spin Terrible Inflation News as ‘Sign of a Really Strong Economy’

CNN can’t help itself. The network actually spun news of Americans seeing the highest inflation in nearly 40 years as positive news in an attempt to benefit President Joe Biden.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released a jaw-dropping report showing that the Consumer Price Index skyrocketed 6.8 percent on a year-over-year basis in November. The inflation was “even more than expected,” and was the “fastest rate since 1982,” according to CNBC.

CNN Chief Business Correspondent Christine Romans kicked off her coverage of the inflation news on CNN Newsroom by initially characterizing it as a “gut punch that feels like it really peaked there,” and “the worst in years.”

Then came the incredible spin: “But demand is strong. This is a sign of a really strong economy, guys. People are rushing out all at the same time to buy the stuff they want after we’ve been in a huge pandemic.” Perhaps Romans didn’t realize that “too many dollars chasing too few goods” is actually a glaring reason why the U.S. is experiencing horrific inflation now.

CNN doesn’t seem to get how spinning a disastrous inflation report to insulate Biden makes the network look even more terrible in light of its own recent reporting. CNN’s Reliable Sources newsletter on Dec. 6 reported that “[t]he White House, not happy with the news media's coverage of the supply chain and economy, has been working behind the scenes trying to reshape coverage in its favor.”

The newsletter, written by senior media reporter Oliver Darcy, said, “Senior White House and admin officials — including NEC Deputy Directors David Kamin and Bharat Ramamurti, along with Ports Envoy John Porcari — have been briefing major newsrooms over the past week.” Darcy even had the audacity to paint the spin sessions as “productive, with anchors and reporters and producers getting to talk with the officials.”

Romans — who is a reporter — trying to “reshape coverage in [Biden’s] favor” makes CNN look like state-run media in light of the White House’s recent meddling with news organizations. The Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics states clearly: “Deny favored treatment to advertisers, donors or any other special interests, and resist internal and external pressure to influence coverage.”

But CNN trying to spin inflation in any way to protect Biden is typical behavior. Just recently, CNN did public relations for the president by blaming nearly anything and anyone but Biden’s disastrous economic policies for his poor polling numbers. CNN’s coverage on inflation is like watching Saturday Night Live in 1978 when the show mocked attempts to spin inflation as not a big deal.

CNN also recently published a story headlined, “Why inflation can actually be good for everyday Americans and bad for rich people.”

The Media Research Center created a compilation of clips from Fox News, Fox Business and conservative radio host Dan Bongino who have been sounding the alarm bells on how dangerous the inflation crisis is for months now.
