On August 4, The View celebrity guest Kelly Osbourne made a big-time gaffe on air. In a discussion of Donald Trump and racism, Osbourne declared “If you kick every Latino out of this country, then who is going to be cleaning your toilet, Donald Trump?”
Although her intentions were pure, Osbourne’s comment was met with big-time backlash, making her Tuesday’s “most hated person on the internet.” Yet, in the wake of the incident, co-host Nicolle Wallace, who was not present for Osbourne’s flub, had some thoughts to share.
“What struck me was that you guys know her heart, and it was so instant that you were able to forgive her,” Wallace said. “And it made me wonder if we gave that kind of benefit of the doubt to people we are ideologically opposed to ... if Ted Cruz or Mike Huckabee said that, I can picture all of you looking into the camera and saying ‘I’m going do something in my toilet and you’re gonna clean it!’”
Some of the other co-hosts tried to justify, “There’s a difference, if someone’s running for office,” Michelle Collins responded. “I mean, Kelly would still have my vote, but—”
Wallace then expressed her frustration that many Hispanic people had attacked co-host Rosie Perez for forgiving Osbourne so quickly. “She [Perez] celebrates and advances Latinas every single day at this table,” Wallace protested.
“Every time someone says something, every time they step in doo-doo, it ends up on our run down and we all take turns beating the piñata.”
“If we could just have the same kind of benefit of the doubt for other people other than our friends,” Wallace continued, “I think the conversation and the debates would be a lot less acrimonious. That was my only point. I think it's beautiful what you did for Kelly. I just wish it would extend to other people.”
Whoopi responded, “That’s like saying the only people we like do we defend.” (It might be a shocker, but that’s kinda how it goes on The View.) “That’s not true. I’ve defended GW.”
In the end, Whoopi declared that Osbourne had simply “made a boo-boo.” “If you’ve ever met a real racist,” the co-host declared, “it’s a whole other world honey.”
Yet, something still tells me that the liberal ladies at The View would never call a similar gaff from a GOP candidate “a boo-boo.” It just wouldn’t happen.
