While trying to do Hillary a favor and expose one of her top opponent’s dirty laundry, Democrats may have opened up a “Pandora’s Box” of the past for the left’s 2016 favorite, Hillary Clinton. CNN’s Carol Costello continued the network's assault on Republican candidates today by dedicating a segment to vilifying an excerpt from a book Jeb Bush wrote back in 1995:
"One of the reasons more young women are giving birth out of wedlock and more young men are walking away from their paternal obligations is that there is no longer a stigma attached to this behavior, no reason to feel shame. Many of these young women and young men look around and see their friends engaged in the same irresponsible conduct. Their parents and neighbors have become ineffective at attaching some sense of ridicule to this behavior. There was a time when neighbors and communities would frown on out-of-wedlock births and when public condemnation was enough of a stimulus for one to be careful."
Republican strategist -- and NewsBusters contributing writer -- Cheri Jacobus gave Bush a strong defense by noting that this chapter of his book was actually aimed at finding a way to protect single mothers, and to stem the stigma that it was OK for young men to walk away from their families. But in addition to her defense, Jacobus challenged CNN to play fair by bringing to light that it is now fair game for Hillary’s opponents to dig into her life in the 90s:
The left of course is making a big deal of this- Maybe to take focus away from the Republican’s trip overseas. But I've got to tell you, the person who most unhappy about this, even though the left is trying to do her a favor, is Hillary Clinton. You are reaching back 20 years for old quotes in something Jeb Bush wrote. And so now you open up that Pandora's Box. You’ve got Hillary Clinton 20 years ago in the White House, and she’s been trying to say it’s ancient history, off limits, can’t do that anymore. CNN’s going to have to report that, and we look forward to it.
Naturally Costello quickly changed the subject away from Clinton and back to the Bush-bashing, but she was visibly flustered over being called out for her bias.
