The Washington Post offered a roundup of commencement speech wisdom on the front of Saturday’s Style section. It started with Oprah Winfrey urging the graduates of Harvard to think broadly enough to “have more face-to-face conversations with people you may disagree with.”
That’s really not a principle at work inside the liberal media. CBS left that clip out in hailing Oprah's speech on Friday. The only wise people on the Post’s speaker list were liberals they agree with:
The Post’s David Beard presented only Oprah, Obama, Gabby Giffords, Melinda Gates, Stephen Colbert, and Post reporter Wil Haygood.
They repeated Obama's words about his youth: “Sometimes I wrote off my own failings as just another example of the world trying to keep a black man down.” He meant in his youth, but it could describe Obama defenders every day of his presidency.
Giffords gave a short speech at Bard College:
“The nation’s counting on you to create, to lead, to innovate,” she said with difficulty following a longer speech by her husband, former NASA astronaut Mark Kelly. “Be bold, be courageous, do your best.”
AP reported Kelly spoke about the couple's new political action committee, Americans for Responsible Gun Control. "Gabby's challenge now is to lead us forward and to bring more and more people with her," he said. "We are the counterbalance to the professional gun lobby — a truly citizen-based, people-driven movement to reclaim this debate and find, in the great tradition of our democracy, moderate, pragmatic solutions that respect our American values of the right to bear arms and the right to safety."
Meet the gun controllers: they're all moderate amateur pragmatists. They sound as delusional as journalists who proclaim their objectivity.
The Saturday roundup didn’t include Colbert’s joke to University of Virginia graduates,as the Post previously noted: "You do not owe the previous generation anything," he told them. "Thanks to us, you owe it to the Chinese."
