“When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are!” Unless of course you’re Keira Knightley’s daughter Edie. That little girl is unfortunate enough to have a “woke” Mommy who won’t let her will see certain Disney classics.
According to IndieWire on Oct. 16, Knightley was sucking down a margarita on The Ellen Degeneres Show when the host attempted to verify a rumor about the actress’s daughter: “... and she [Edie] is banned from watching certain children’s movies, right?” Knightley affirmed, saying: “Cinderella … because, you know, she waits around for a rich guy to rescue her. Don’t, rescue yourself, obviously.” The like-minded crowd cheered a bit, and Knightley continued: “The other one I’m annoyed about, because I really like the film, but, Little Mermaid, I mean, the songs are great, but do not give your voice up for a man!” Again she was rewarded with applause.
Knightley’s revelations came on the heels of her telling Degeneres that she will support her daughter “in anything she wants to do” with her life, so would Edie’s enforced ignorance of such classics like “Under the Sea” and “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid hamper her potential as a musician or show tune writer? Possibly.
There’s also a kid-friendly nugget of wisdom in The Little Mermaid: Don’t make deals with mysterious, conniving strangers, whether they’re sea witches or otherwise.
Also, Knightley doesn’t seem to have much sympathy for Cinderella using virtue and hard work to overcome her mean stepfamily. “Maid” might not be at the top of Knightley’s preferred career list for her daughter, but surely perseverance in hardship is a transferable skill.
