On Wednesday, an open letter was issued to Nancy Pelosi by the historic Californian newspaper, the Sacramento Bee. The editorial board called on her to step aside in the race for Speaker of the House, citing the good of the Democratic Party. As it stands, 44 Democratic candidates and incumbents say they will not be voting for Pelosi as speaker.
The six Pulitzer Prize-winning paper warned that “The Republican Party is now clearly the party of Donald Trump.” And, to ensure the survival of the country, the left-leaning publication suggested, “the Democratic Party cannot be seen as the party of Nancy Pelosi and win in November.” The article continued:
“Pelosi says that while no one is indispensable, she is still the best person for the job. On Monday, her press office sent out a column in which Paul Krugman of The New York Times praised Pelosi as “by far the greatest speaker of modern times,” and questioned why she gets so little credit from the media for her accomplishments, which include the Affordable Care Act, and the stimulus package and financial reforms after Wall Street’s meltdown. If you’ll recall, similar statements were made about the eminently qualified Hillary Clinton – and we know how that turned out.”
The open letter also scolded Pelosi for her attack on the press:
“On the other hand, Pelosi isn’t doing herself any favors by playing the victim. Asked during a Sunday interview about Democrats opposing her for speaker, she accused MSNBC of being on a “jag” against her. Better than most, she ought to know that’s getting precariously close to Trump calling any critical coverage “fake news.””
A liberal newspaper, in a stark blue state, calling on one of the leaders of the Democratic Party to step aside, berating Pelosi on her treatment of the press, all while comparing her to Hillary Clinton. When will the rest of the media start touting the op-ed as evidence of trouble for Democrats? That certainly would be the case if a Republican congressional leader was the target of such harsh criticism.
