It's so odd to watch a liberal celebrity say one thing “for the sake of unity,” and then take it back a few sentences later.
But that’s exactly what comedian Martin Short did in his interview with the Daily Beast. Amidst the discussion over his Netflix special with Steve Martin, coming out in the next week, Short told Matt Wilstein how he felt about President Trump, Trump supporters, and the administration. After trying to say that he didn’t “just want a liberal audience,” Short stated: “As far as the Trump presidency, I wouldn’t even call it a presidency. It’s an asterisk. It’s a typo. I mean, everyday it’s worse and 10 years from now the history books will be having a field day with it and the shame of the people who supported him.”
This was in stark contrast to the statement he made two sentences before, where Short said, “You want the audience to feel that this is, in a way, a safe zone. A zone where they’re not going to be made to feel like a jerk because they voted one way.”
Instead, he blamed the voters, telling Wilstein, “Donald Trump is not the issue, it’s really the people who support him.”
This is coming from the same person who compared Michelle Bachmann to the Taliban and said that the Palin family was like the “Honey Boo Boo family,” so it’s not unprecedented. But it is hilarious that he is trying to strike some chord of unity and harmony in order to sell his show, while completely undoing his sales pitch in the next breath.
Sure, lots of Trump supporters will want to watch a comedian who thinks they are shameful.
