Just what the country needed: another overpaid, Hollywood has-been preaching from the pulpit of yet another awards show about politics.
Actor Robert De Niro found that there were “many parallels” that could be drawn between the present day and the events detailed in the Post film. In his introduction to Meryl Streep, given at the National Board of Review Awards Gala on January 9, De Niro praised the press and took several swipes at President Trump.
“At the time of the story, Donald Trump was suffering from ‘bone spurs,’” the actor quipped, referring to Trump’s draft deferments. “Today, the world is suffering from the real Donald Trump.”
Right, because Trump started world hunger, human trafficking, and any and all diseases. Quite an achievement.
De Niro thought his own statement was an achievement, however, telling the audience, “Come on, let’s go, let’s clap for that. This fucking idiot is the president.”
He continued, “It’s the emperor’s new clothes! The guy is a fucking fool! Come on,” before valiantly defending the press.
“Our government today, with the prompting of our baby-in-chief, has --jerk-off-in-chief, I call him-- has put the press under siege, ridiculing it and trying to discredit it with outrageous attacks and lies,” he added. “And again, just like 1971, the press is distinguishing itself with brave and exacting journalism.”
The parallels between The Post and reality apparently went on.
“The movie gave us glimpses of President Nixon as delusional, narcissistic, petty, vindictive, nasty, and batshit fucking crazy. Ah, the good old days,” De Niro ranted.
