It’s easy to say that many people don’t understand just what Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is. It’s harder to say that Trump doesn’t understand what DACA is. But can one say that the administration is gaslighting people? (Seems like the media would be a more likely candidate for that.)
But CNN’s Jake Tapper was willing to go there on Late Night with Seth Meyers on September 5. While discussing DACA, Tapper stated, “Trump doesn’t fully understand all the promises that he makes.” But Tapper also thinks that people are being told they are crazy, although he didn't say who was at fault.
Meyers asked, “Do people want you to confirm that this is outside the realm of conventional?” To which Tapper responded, “Absolutely. They want to know that they’re not...You know the whole term about being gaslit when someone comes in and they convince you that you’re crazy when they’re the ones being crazy.”
While the CNN anchor admitted that DACA was in fact, “questionable in terms of its constitutionality,” he also stated that in order to be a part of DACA, the government has to receive an immigrant’s information. This, apparently, makes Trump’s decision worse, because “Not only are these people vulnerable, now the government knows where they live.”
Considering that DACA was Obama’s initiative, whose fault is it that the government now has all that information?
Tapper also addressed the admiration he has recently received from the left, since he has always criticized current presidents and their decisions. He said, “I don’t expect it’s going to last, once the Chelsea Clinton administration begins. Or Oprah.” The left is indeed fickle.
