In the second to last episode of NBC’s The Carmichael Show, “Three Year Anniversary,” a threesome supposedly makes Jerrod Carmichael a better man.
On Wednesday night’s episode, Jerrod and his fiancée Maxine (Amber Stevens West) celebrate their three-year anniversary by having a threesome with a random woman they meet at a restaurant. The next morning, basking in their post-threesome glow, the couple discuss how they can “accomplish anything together now.”
Maxine: Happy anniversary. Last night was... Amazing.
Jerrod: It was incredible, right? Every couple should have a threesome. I've never felt more in sync with you.
Maxine: Mm-hmm.
Jerrod: I'm not gonna lie. Really proud of the work I did in there. I mean... It was overwhelming for a second, but it's good to know that in a fight-or-flight situation, your boy here spars with the best of them.
Maxine: Yeah, I feel like we can accomplish anything together now. You know, if they had group sex at corporate retreats, I bet company productivity would skyrocket.
Jerrod: After last night, I think you finally passed Jay Z as the most important person in the world to me.
Jessica: Yeah, no, and I was like, "Well, this is a grocery store. You're supposed to have the bags."
Jerrod: Hey, why is she still here?
Maxine: Yeah, it's almost noon; it's like, how long are you supposed to stay after a threesome?
Jerrod: It was clearly a one-night stand. Everybody knows the rules. As soon as the sun hits your face, you're supposed to get out of there like a vampire.
Later, when the two start fighting, Maxine begs Jerrod to be a better boyfriend. Apparently the threesome turned Jerrod into a “loving, compassionate person who thinks about [Maxine’s] feelings.” Jerrod explains how during the threesome he was especially tuned in to Maxine’s desires because it was a delicate situation that could have gone wrong. He asks, “So you want me to live every day like we're in the middle of a threesome?”
Jerrod celebrates his new self by deciding to show the world the new Jerrod, the “threesome Jerrod,” by marrying Maxine in a courthouse and marching to his parents’ house to defend his new wife after they accidentally discover how the couple celebrated their anniversary. While Jerrod’s mother is disgusted by the news of the threesome, his father is proud.
The episode also gives a shout out to liberals’ favorite couple to swoon over: the Obamas. After Jerrod and Maxine have trouble rudely kicking out their newest sexual partner, Jerrod remarks, “If there's a lesson to be learned here, it's that we are just way too much fun as a couple. People are gonna get attached. I bet this is what it's like when Barack and Michelle have threesomes.”
While the show did have its conservative moments, this season of The Carmichael Show contained a number of episodes teeming with liberal propaganda: blaming Republicans for mass shootings, mocking the police, and supporting amoral social positions such as euthanasia, drug use, and, here, threesomes. All in all, conservatives are probably relieved to hear this season was the show’s final one.
