In Tuesday’s season two finale of Fox’s Scream Queens, titled “Drain the Swamp,” two random political references are tossed into the story. Perhaps that should have been expected, given the title of the episode – one of Trump’s campaign slogans, and the show’s history of political name-dropping.
First, C.U.R.E. Institute’s Dean Cathy Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Dr. Brock (John Stamos) are wed by Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy (Dan Gilvary). The reference to Justice Kennedy is a random, unexplained twist, but not the first time the show has brought in a SCOTUS look-alike. Last year Munsch beat up a character wearing a Justice Antonin Scalia mask while ranting about his Supreme Court decisions.
The second political reference happened later in the episode. Ingrid (Kirstie Alley) is determined to kill off everyone so she creates a fertilizer bomb. She cages them and, amidst the panicking of prisoners, an old friend appears. Nurse Denise Hemphill (Niecy Nash) has survived in the cryo-chamber and reunites with the staff. In greeting everyone, she asks what she’s missed. “How’s Hillary working out? I mean, first female president and I miss the moment.” Oops. Awkward.
Munsch: You're alive, that means my cryo-chamber worked!
Denise: Damn right it did, crunchy Munsch. The low temperature allowed my heart to beat slowly enough to regain its strength or something. Anyway, I'm back, bitches! All right. What did I miss? Ooh! How's Hillary working out? I mean, the first female president, and I missed the moment! Damn it!
Chanel: Can you just stop talking and defuse the bomb?
Denise defuses the bomb (she leaned how from watching the television show Quantico) and the staff is freed. Good times. We’ll see what season three under a President Donald Trump brings next year.
