Liberal director Joss Whedon on Monday warned that Donald Trump “cannot be allowed” to take office. Without explaining exactly what he meant, the Avengers filmmaker tweeted, “This is simple: Trump cannot CANNOT be allowed a term in office. It's not about 2018. It's about RIGHT NOW.”
In a follow-up tweet, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator lectured, “Letting Trump take office means burying democracy. Letting him take it without the popular vote means burying it alive.”
Since the election of the businessman, Whedon has been tweeting his displeasure and seeming inability to accept last Tuesday’s results. It’s unclear how, exactly, he wants to deny the presidency from a man who won 306 electoral votes. But it may be a reference to a Change.org petition to give the White House to Hillary Clinton. Yahoo News explained:
As of Friday afternoon, more than 2.4 million people had signed a petition to the U.S. Electoral College, urging its members to ignore their states’ votes and cast their ballots for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
“Mr. Trump is unfit to serve. His scapegoating of so many Americans, and his impulsivity, bullying, lying, admitted history of sexual assault, and utter lack of experience make him a danger to the Republic,” wrote Elijah Berg, who launched the petition on Change.org.

In September, Whedon created a Super PAC to defeat Trump and donated $1 million to the effort.
On September 30, he appeared on MSNBC to bemoan the “scary” GOP nightmare, warning, “I think [Trump is] a threat to our country. I think he is a threat to our idea of democracy. I think he's a scary monster and I am not shy about that.”
In 2015, Whedon said of global warming skeptics: “Policy makers who deny basic scientific truth should also be denied penicillin, horseless carriages, air time on the magic box of shadows.”
