The social justice warriors and members of the trans community have come out against Mark Ruffalo’s new drama, Anything, because he chose actor Matt Bomer as a transgender prostitute. Bomer is an openly gay actor, but the issue isn’t that he is gay– it’s because Bomer isn’t transgender and some are up in arms because the role wasn’t given to a trans actor.
The plot to Anything is simple, a drama that "centers on a man (John Carroll Lynch) who, despondent over the death of his wife, moves from Mississippi to Los Angeles and strikes up a romantic relationship with a transgender sex worker.”
Myra Byrne – a self-proclaimed social justice activist, poet and actor, musician and recording engineer, wrote an open letter to Ruffalo and Bomer on the importance of hiring a trans actor for a trans role:
There are many qualified trans actors and writers who could have played in and advised on the construction of the scenes you’re about to edit into a motion picture. They will lose more work because of this....
With respect to your skilled work and sensitive portrayals of characters in the past, I beg you to shelve and scrap this film before you begin post-production. That act will send a message to the Hollywood establishment: “We were wrong. We all need to do better and we have decided to set an example for others in our position.
This act, more than any movie you put out, will give you back more than your investment. You have an opportunity, right now, to change the status quo. Lives and careers truly hang in the balance...
Breitbart captured some of the most aggressive "progressive" complaints on Twitter:
Ruffalo responded to the criticism on Wednesday.
“To the Trans community. I hear you. It’s wrenching to you see you in this pain [sic],” he said, and then went on to actually explain WHY he chose Bomer for the role: "In all honesty I suggested Matt for the role after the profound experience I had with him while making The Normal Heart."
This is just the latest example on how it’s nearly impossible to make everyone happy, Forget the fact that a talented actor (who happens to be gay) was given a role which could’ve been given to any actor (straight or gay), instead people are upset that the role wasn’t given to a trans actor. It’s not about whether the actor is trans or gay – it’s about the best actor for the role, and clearly Ruffalo thought Bomer was the right choice.
The way these social justice warriors are acting these days, there will be rigid LGBT quotas for Hollywood before too long...even the gay men are not immune from being "discriminatory."
